State of India's Garment Workers
Contributing almost 4% to the GDP, the garment sector is the second largest employer after agriculture, employing nearly 51 million people directly and 68 million people indirectly in 2015-16 (Make in India statistics, 2015). According to estimates, the industry creates 1.3 million jobs every year and is fertile ground for employment of skilled, unskilled and semi-skilled workers.
As part of the COLLECT initiative, information has been collected from 1686 workers from 69 districts across 11 states in India.
